When I was young, I always seemed to be looking to build a business. I played with everything from selling gift wrap, cards and candles to cutting grass. I have always liked to be working and learning. I had several jobs that lead to working on buildings, homes, attractions, etc. I was always in construction in one way or another since I was in my teens. Upon relocating to Utah, I started working for a contractor mostly in framing and carpentry. At the same time, I was working for a top-rated resort learning the service business and how to meet client’s needs and expectations. When the financial crisis hit in the late 90’s, I decided it was time to take things into my own hands and systematically started building the business structure for Crossbeam Builders. I took some time to get business training and licensing to set up a construction company in Utah, which officially kicked off in 2010.
LEARNING FROM THE UNEXPECTED
All sorts of things arise when you are in the Building and Remodeling industry. The dynamics of working with homeowners, trade partners and employees always keeps me on my toes. It is difficult to see all the nuances in running a company until you are doing it. We have seen events like uncovering artifacts from 3000 years ago to homeowners catching a project on fire! Neither of those things come with a training manual! I feel one of the challenges we face is managing the emotional component that comes with our projects. While we pride ourselves on communication and transparency, we are often working on the owner’s most valuable asset. This is a dynamic journey that often takes flexibility, adaptability and problem solving. With that being said, the technical side is typically straight forward, but the financial or time constraints are often the impetus for emotional responses that can be sensitive to negotiate.
PLANNING TO DO BETTER IN THE FUTURE
We are always looking for improvement and ways to service our clients better. I feel like we have the support systems in place to educate, communicate and deliver an amazing experience. What we are striving to improve is the overall length of time and efficiency of the planning process, transparency especially when it comes to challenges and negotiating the emotional journey of building projects to help manage expectations. While we do everything in our power to navigate this landscape, we are often look to improve our systems and learn from our experiences.
OUR UNIQUE VALUE
There are different types of building, remodeling and renovation companies. There are the custom home type builders that view what they do as selling a product and companies that assemble a product for their clients in a manner like being a handyman. I view our company as a part of the service industry, where we work with our clients to build an amazing working relationship to design and implement their vision. What we are trying to do is orchestrate the dream and provide a positive experience in spite of whatever challenges may arise along the path.
